Connect the app
The last step: open the app, tap once, watch it work.
1. Get the app & sign in
The Franzl app is free on the App Store and on Google Play. You can sign in with email, Google, or Apple.
2. Activate: usually a single tap
Only one thing matters: your phone is on the same Wi-Fi as your Home Assistant. Then tap Set up Franzl in the app, and Franzl looks for its gateway by itself. You get to watch:
- "Looking for Franzl on your home network …" — the app is having a look around, for a few seconds.
- Green check: "Franzl Gateway found — code filled in automatically" — the gateway handed its activation code straight to the app. The field is already filled; all you do is tap Activate. That's it.
- "No Franzl box visible on Wi-Fi right now" — not an error and nothing to worry about. Some networks simply don't pass searches like this along. Then you use one of the two ways below, which always work.
iPhone & iPad: the first time round, iOS asks whether Franzl may find devices on your local network. Please tap Allow. Without that permission the app can't see your gateway on Wi-Fi and you'll enter the code by hand. Already tapped "Don't allow" by accident? You can undo it: iOS Settings → Franzl → turn on Local Network.
If the code doesn't arrive on its own
Both ways are equally good, and both work even when you're not at home:
- Scan the QR code. Tap Scan QR code in the app and point the camera at the QR code in the Franzl panel. Handy when Home Assistant is open on a computer.
- Type the code. The same panel shows a 9-character code made of capital letters and digits (e.g.
A1B2C3D4E). You'll find the panel in Home Assistant under Settings → Apps → Franzl Gateway → Open, or as the Franzl entry in the sidebar.
The code expires, and that's on purpose. It's valid for about 15 minutes and renews itself afterwards. If some time has passed in between, reload the panel — the currently valid code is always the one shown there. An expired code is the most common reason for "code not found".
3. What happens by itself after that
After you tap Activate it usually takes one to two minutes. In that time Franzl creates your home, sets up encrypted remote access, and connects to the gateway. The app shows the progress; feel free to close it, you'll come back to the same place.
Then the app walks you through three short steps:
- Confirm your devices. Franzl looks around in Home Assistant and suggests what it found: inverter, battery, wallbox, heat pump, meters. You confirm what's right. For meters it asks what the device actually measures — whether it's the grid meter at your house connection or a single inverter. That one question decides whether Franzl can later calculate self-sufficiency and surplus exactly instead of estimating.
- Solar system. Size in kWp, orientation and tilt. That's what your solar forecast is built from. Why that's more precise than it sounds.
- Electricity tariff. Fixed price, day/night, or dynamic (e.g. aWATTar). With dynamic tariffs Franzl plans against tomorrow's real exchange prices.
You can change all of it later at any time; nothing here is final.
4. Bring the family along (optional)
In the More tab under Household you invite other people. They need neither their own gateway nor an activation code: they install the app, open your invitation link, and they're in. When inviting, you pick a role — Manager (may set everything up), Member (may look and control), or Guest (may only look). You stay the Owner of the home.
When something doesn't work
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| "No Franzl box visible on Wi-Fi right now" | Not an error. Tap Search again, or simply enter the code. |
| The search never finds anything | Phone on a guest Wi-Fi? Network permission denied on iPhone? → Troubleshooting |
| "Code invalid" or "not found" | The code has expired. Reload the panel and use the current one. |
| "Too many attempts" | Wait a few minutes, then try again. |
| Activation stuck on "Waiting for Franzl" | Up to 2 minutes is normal. After that: is the gateway still running (green status)? Does Home Assistant have internet? |
| The gateway shows no code at all | Restart it once; on the very first start it's still setting up its database. |
